Thursday a week away from Thanksgiving, EvenIng Prayer

                               Antiphon on Psalm 105

God re-mem-bered his holy word, and led forth his people with gladness.

Sr Corita Kent, IHM (11/20/1918 - 9/18/1986)

In 1968 I was confirmed and set on a path the signposts of  which
looked much
like this. The
Sr Corita
explosion was
HUGELY important to me in my 60s in making stronger, brighter connections between "religion," which
I came to recognize as the spiritual life
and the world at large.

WONDER
BREAD
indeed!

Mom even bought me 2
serigraphs, one of which
is on the wall in front of
me as I work.

                 THNAK YOU. Eternally.

William Byrd, 1628, John Merbeck, 1585, and Thomas Tallis, 1585

                                   Psalm 105:3

Glory
in
God’s holy Name;
let the
hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice

Grant.. that all who are touched by the power
of music… glimpses of the eternity that they
may be made ready to… behold your glory unveiled…
                                           (Collect)

                Draw
                 near
                 to
                God
                and
                he
                will draw near to you.

                                                      Luke 17:14
 Jesus said
to them “Go and show yours-elves to the priests." And as
they went they were made clean.
                               As they went ...

Evening Prayer

GOD, grant me the serenity
to accept the things
I cannot change,

Courage to change the
things I can, and the
wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as the
pathway to peace.

Taking, as He did, this
sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it.

Trusting that He will make
all things right if I
surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy
in this life, and supremely
happy with Him forever in
the next.

Amen

NOTE: This is the full prayer attributed to Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr reportedly written in 1926. Niebuhr was a Lutheran pastor and theologian. Usually his "Serenity Prayer" is quoted using the first 2 verses only.

Hilda Abbess of Whitby, 680

                                         Habakkuk 3:17-18
Though
the
fruit
tree
does
not
blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails, and the flock is cut off from the fold, and there
is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice
in the Lord; and I will exalt in the
God of our salvation.
Hilda was abbess over the double house of Whitby, a monastery with both men and woman, as was common in the Celtic tradition., It was at the Council of Whitby in 663/664 that the fatal decision was made to follow the Roman rather than the Celtic tradition in England and with that decision disappeared such things as double monasteries… Hilda’s heart was with the Celtic tradition, but she was obedient to the will of the church. And Hilda does not even appear on the Roman calendar! BUMMER!

Pray for religious communities of both women and men,  For cooperation and respect between women and men and For all who encourage scholarship and learning. (New Lutheran Book, edited. )

Evening Prayer

                                                             The Letter of James 2:26
               Just as
               the body
               without
               the spirit
               is dead,
               so faith
               without
               works
              is dead.

In memory of the life of Peter/Adbul Rahman Kassig, 24, who was murdered working among the people of Syria.

       Psalm 89:14a
                                           Righteousness and justice,

Lord, are the foundations of your throne

Pray for comfort and peace for Peter’s family and parents, who have asked that Peter, who was a former Army Ranger and who had returned to help innocent victim, had converted to Islam and and taken the name Abdul Rahman, be remembered for his work among the people of Syria rather than for his death.

O Allah, forgive and have mercy upon him, ...and make honorable his reception. Expand his
entry, and cleanse him
with water, snow, and ice, and purify him of sin as a white robe is purified of filth…’

Contribute to the charity he created Special Emergency Response and Assistance (SERA).  SERA set up another FundRazr campaign at this address: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/fYwZb. It was used to collect money for Peter's trip to Syria and is still active.

Friday evening

                                                       Psalm 92:1a, 2
 It is
good
thing to give thanks to the Lord….
To tell of your loving-kindness
in the morning and of your faithfulness in the
night season

The Commemoration of Samuel Seabury, (1729-1796) The first American Episcopal Bishop

                                  And so the day begins
                                 (The Inivtitory BCP Pg 80)
Lord, open
our
lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Seven Golden Daffodils

I may not have mansion, I haven't any land
not  even a paper dollar to crinkle in my hands
But I can show you morning on a thousand hills
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

I do not have a fortune to buy you pretty things
But I can weave you moonbeams for necklaces and rings
And I can show you morning on a thousand hills
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

Oh, seven golden daffodils all shining in the sun
To light our way to evening when our day is done
And I will give music and a crust of bread
And a pillow of piney boughs to rest your head.
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head.

     lacking in
     wisdom,
     ask God,
     who gives
     to all
     generously
     ungrudgingly
     & it will be
     given to you.
     But ask in
faith for the one who doubts
is like a wave ..., driven and
     tossed by the wind.

Veterans Day and the Feast of St Martin, Bishop of Tours, 397

                                                                    Luke 14: 27

Whoever
does not
carry the
cross and
follow me cannot
be my
disciple.

Martin (316-397) became a soldier in his youth. Legend has it that one night when he was on duty he saw a beggar shivering from the  cold, he cut his cloak in half and gave it to the beggar. The next night in a dream he saw Christ in heaven clothed in his half-cloak. It became “increasingly difficult to reconcile his ideal of the Christian life with the duties of military service. Eventually, he [was] baptized and he left the army. Like may of his modern counterparts, this 4th century “conscientious objector” had difficulty proving that he was not a coward , and he finally was released, now about 20.”
“Martin was one of the founders of the Celtic Church, which spread the Gospel to the British Isles  and what is now France, Germany and the Low Countries. He is regarded as the patron saint of France. “
