St Matthias was not chosen by Jesus as “one of the 12.”  After the  crucifixion, resur-rection and ascension of Jesus,  when it was clear that the mission would carry on, the remainin

11 decided that they needed a 12th apostle 

to take the place of Judas Iscariot who had betray-

ed The Lord. The proviso was that the be someone who had known Jesus from the beginning, from his baptism by John. Two were put forward and Mat-

thias was chosen. Beyond his election nothing 

further is heard of Matthias, nor of Jospeh, 

the runner up. But that very anonymity 

is eloquent.
