Flight to Egypt

Now after the wise men had left,

an angel appeared

to Joseph in a dream and 

said “Get up, 

take the child an

his mother    

and flee to Egypt 

and remain there 

until I tell you, 

for Herod 

is about to search

for the child, 

to destroy him.”

and then, exhausted, the wise men went to bed

                               ... and being warned is a dream... 

Epiphany collect

lead us to your 

presence where we may see 

your glory 

face to face... 

2nd Vespers of Epiphany

they brought him gifts, gold as to a mighty King, frankincense as to the true God, 

and myrrh to foreshow his burial. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Arise, shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has dawned 

upon you.

#3 for the Eve of the Epiphany

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, shine on our darkness and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant redeemer is laid.  

Shall we then yield him in costly devotion, offers of Edom and offerings divine, gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, myrrh 

from the forest and gold from the mine? 

Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favor secure, richer by far is the heart’s adoration, nearer to God are the prayers of the poor. (Hymn 118)
