Friday Evening Prayer

We will tell
of your
loving kindness
early in the
morning,
O Lord,
and of your
 faithfulness
in the night season.

Antiphon Psalm 92

Friday

Jacob
woke
from
his
sleep
and
said
"Surely
the
Lord
is in
this
place
and I
did not
know it.”
And
he was
afraid
and
said
"How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God,
and this is the gate of heaven.”
Genesis 28:17-18

This comes right after Jacob's dream of the ladder set up between heaven and earth. Too often I just think -“Oh yea! Jacob's ladder! Cool!”and scurry past... But it really struck me again today that this follows hard on the heels of our great and renowned patriarch Jacob stealing his brother Essau's birthright and Then tricking his father Issac out of the blessing that was meant for Essau...  As our friend Paul says somewhere All Scripture is inspired by God and useful...  God's love and self-revelation are demonstrably not reserved for the deserving, the worthy or the good...

Feb 9th Today would have been Bill Mahedy's 49th anniversary of ordination. This picture is of him and Fr Jack Whitehouse in the early 90s after the fire that destroyed St David's.

Wednesday, sun after rain

Do not be conformed
to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and prefect.
                     Romans 12: 2
I had always assumed, without really thinking about it, that the “will of God” was one thing and it was good and acceptable and prefect. But surely no one thing can be all those things at once! The other day I played a shopping game with almost-three-year-old Eddie. There were a bunch of tiles scattered on the floor that had pictures of food on them and when you matched one up with something on your shopping list, you could put it in the cart.  During my meditation time this morning it struck me that those three things are like the tiles - three different things, one good, one acceptable and one prefect.  The AA program talks somewhere about God making us as perfect as He can given the conditions of any particular day and I like that a lot.  It’s about discernment here - choosing between things - and one is not RIGHT and the other Wrong - or maybe the wrong ones have already been weeded out and so are not on these “tiles.”  Any choice is ok between the good and acceptable and perfect, given the conditions of this particular day and this particular situation... The basic choice is always being conformed to this world or being transformed....
