and the day is past…

Pope John XXIII Renewer of the Church (1881-1963) who called the Vatican II Council that made such a huge difference in the life not just of the Roman Catholic Church, but in of all liturgical churches, and in my own life.

                                             Antiphon on Psalm 50

I desire mercy more than sac-rifice, and a knowledge of God
more than burnt offerings.

 Pray for the renewal
of the church, for unity of
witness & mission, for
the spirit of love & service
and for humility and humor.

Blandina and her Companions, Martyrs at Lyons, 177

     Collect for the feast

 Grant,
O Lord,
that we
may be
rooted
deep in
your love…*
Blandina, a slave, and 47 others were martyred at Lyons that day in the year 177.  Among them were  Blandina, a slave, and her mistress, her bishop, Pothius and a 15 year old boy who, together "offered a single wreath woven of diverse colors and flowers of all kinds"  (Eusebius)
The companions of Blandina, in their torment, looked upon her suspended from a the stake; and, in the form of their sister, they beheld him who
was crucified for them.
      Antiphon on the Benedictus

Pray today for all who suffer discrimination, imprisonment, torture or death for their faith.

*Just in case you're keeping track of such things,  "rooted deep" is from the Lutheran collect which  I like it better than the Episcopal which says not “rooted deep” but “rooted and grounded….”

bothers and sisters, holy partners
in a heavenly calling…
The celebration of friendship and more than that, companionship, first celebrated in the 13th century by Franciscans- why am I not surprised? Give thanks today for holy and
life -giving and life sustaining friendships.
