Holy Saturday night

 

be 

strong+ 

he shall 

comfort 

your heart:

wait

patiently

for the Lord.

Holy Saturday morning, 3 April, 2021

 

                     

                     

                                     I

                                 cry 

                            to you 

                         for help, 

                         O Lord;

                  do not  hide 

       your face from me.

The night of Good Friday

                                                                   

And so,

because it 

was the Jewish 

day of Prepara-

tion and the tomb was nearby, they laid him there.  

                           I was so struck by this sentence as I 

                                narrated John’s Passion for Holy Week.

                                Then tonight I was further struck by who

                                it is who are so hastily getting Jesus life-

                                less body safely out the harm's way.

                                (What would  have become of it they

                                hadn’t?)  Is it Peter, keeper of the keys

                                and John the beloved  disciple? Hardly.   

                                It’s Joseph of Arimathea, a guy with 

                                resources and  connections, and a 

                                “secret disciple for fear of the religious 

                                authorities” and Nicodemus  who “had 

                                at first come to Jesu by night.” 

                                            We all have a place.

Good Friday is a long day, beginning that midnight

Jesus 

answered 

Peter, “Will 

you lay down

your life for me?  

Very truly, I tell you,

before the cock crows,

you will have denied me 3 times.”

     laugh him  

 to scorn, saying

   “He trusted 

   in the Lord,

   let him 

   deliver him; 

let him 

 rescue him

  if he delights 

        in him”.

Evening on Maundy Thursday

Be-

cause  

there is 

one bread,

are many 

are one body, 

for we all partake of the one bread.

Holy

Father, 

protect them 

in your name…  

… that they 

may be one, 

as we are one.

                                 Maundy from the Latin  mandatum, 

                                   command to love one another that 

                                     Jesus gave to his disciples the 

                                       night they ate the Passover to-

                                         gether, as he washed their 

                                          feet, including Judas who left

                                             the dinner and betrayed 

                                               Jesus to the authorities. 

Gee , now I can't remember exactly When Judas "went out"....He was at dinner. Was he there at the foot washing? I hope not.... I'll have to look later ...  And now it's later and I am reminded that the footwashing is only in John and he doesn’t mention the institution of the Lord’s Supper.... the rest tell that story but not the washing of the feet. So, when exactly Judas bailed that evening l to sell Jesus out, we still don’t know…. I like to think that he could not have had that intimate time of footashing with Jesus and Then betrayed Jesus .... I guess I'm jI’ll just add it to the list of all the other things I have to ask when the time comes. I'll ask God or Judas himself- whoever I see first....
