Born into a
Christian family
in the northwest
of Britain, Patrick
was kidnapped at
16 by slave-traders, taken to Ireland and forced
to work as a shepherd. At 21, he escaped and re-
turned to Britain. In time, he became priest and
a bishop. About 431 (he would have been 41) a
vision called him to return to Ireland.
