    the Lord rejoice.

Michaelmas, 2010

Where were you when I laid
                  the foundations of the earth?

when the morning stars sang together
and all the heavenly beings sang for joy?
                                                    Job 38:4,7

First Vespers of Michaelmas

Turn from evil and do good,
                Seek peace and pursue it.
                                                                                  Psalm 34:14

As I was going in to continue EP I was thinking what a contradiction/mine boggle/paradox it is to have peace and the sword and how I love it, and then I read the second reading for tonight (Revelation 5:1-12) and saw what I never noticed before - that the Lion of Judah IS the Lamb!

George Higgins used to love the beginning of this passage - that there was no one else worthy to open the seal.

Tuesday morning sunrise

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers,
you are worthy of praise, glory to you.          Benedictus es

on the cusp of the week-end

We will tell of your faithfulness
in the night season. Antiphon: Psalm 92

Sergius of Moswo, d. 192

The mercy of the Lord endures for ever, Come us adore him.

Antiphon on the Venite

Mercy is a word that I am not all that comfortable with.  God knows it’s not because I don’t Need mercy... It just seems a cringing word, an unfortunate word when used with God.  I looked up synonyms and came up with “compassionate treatment” which is better, but a little clunky and plebeian so I kept it at mercy ... I know it’s a rich and wonderful word ... I guess I just hear in my mind a human judge intoning “And may God have mercy on your soul” which means  a person has been sentenced to die. Maybe it’s too close, since the state of Virginia  killed ... executed ... 41 year old Teresa Lewis by lethal injection just yesterday.  May God have mercy on her soul. And ours.
