James was a fisherman called, with his brother John, to leave their father Zebedee’s boat to become apostles. Nicknamed by Jesus “the sons of thunder,” they, with Peter, formed a kind of inner circle with Jesus. His body is buried at the shrine of Santiago de Compotela which is still a popular pilgrimage site.
See the shell? It’s the symbol of St James.... If you look down at the bottom of our Episcopal shield you will see a scallop shell symbolizing that the first bishop of San DIego, Robert Walterstorff, came from St James, La Jolla.
