St James

  Mark 1:19-20
Jesus saw James, son of Zebedee & his brother John who were n the boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them & they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired man & followed him.

Bishop Wolterstorff, the first Bishop of San Diego, was elected from St James-by-the-Sea, which is why our diocesan shield has a tiny shell, symbol of St James, at the bottom of it.

 May God give
us
his bles-sing and may all the ends of
the earth stand in awe of him.

the salvation of God.

Wednesday Evening Prayer

                                                                             Collect for Protection
O God We thank you
for the blessings of the day that is past

Wednesday

                                       Psalm 119:68

  You
  are
  good
  and
  you
  bring
  forth
  good;
  instruct
  me in your statutes.
God, you are good and you bring forth good when You act, there are no “unintended consequences” because You see the Big Picture. Not so with us and we have not yet developed the humility to see that when we act HERE something moves over HERE, from thalidomide babies to global warming...

Mary Magdalene

After his death,
they all ran away,
Mary stood weeping
and broken;
the angel appeared &
said “Its all true -
all the words he
had spoken”. He said
Come and see,
come and see,
come and see
the messiah.
It is he, come to be,
come let us
worship the king.

(The Acts of the Apostles 21:3b-6)
…we sailed to Syria & landed at Tyre because the ship was to unload cargo there. We looked up the disciples and stayed there 7 days…. When the days were ended, we left and proceeded on our journey, & all of them, with wives and children, escorted us down to the beach & said farewell
to one another. Then we went aboard & they returned home.

Pray for peace in Syria and throughout the the region.

Today's Gospel

                      The Seed and the Sower:
                                      Matthew 13
Small,
hard,
un-
attract-
ive
to the senses, yet within [the seed] lies the promise of green and growing things, of harvest & bread.  But for all its promise it remains only a seed, contained in it’s outer shell unless it surrenders itself to an environ-
ment that can realize its true potential.

Nathan Soderblom (1866-1931) Swedish Lutheran Archbishop of Uppsala. Theologian, Ecumenist and winner of the Noble Peace Prize in 1930. (Ironically, he had conducted the memorial service for Alfred Noble in 1897)

                                      Nathan Soderblom

God’s
revelation
is not
finished -
it continues.

God is ever revealing himself.

Prayers are asked today in The New Book
*for the unity
     of the church.
*for understanding &
     growth of evangel-
          ical catholicity.
*for peace in our world & for a new respect for      the insights of religions that are not our own.

From The Standing Committee on Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal ChurchSöderblom took a great interest in the early liturgical renewal movement among Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and Lutherans. This coincided with his deep commitment to the unity of the churches of Christ and his passion for ecumenical advancement. In 1925 he invited to Stockholm Episcopalian/Anglican, Reformed, Lutheran, and Orthodox leaders and together they formed the Universal Christian Council on Life and Work. Because of his effort and his tireless advocacy of Christian unity, Söderblom is numbered among the ecumenists whose efforts led eventually to the formation of the World Council of Churches in 1948. … It was Söderblom’s advocacy for church unity as a means toward world peace that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930.

A Summer Tuesday

                                Romans 8:26
the Spirit helps us in our weak-ness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit intercedes for us with
sighs too deep for words.

Sunday Evening Prayer

                                        Psalm 113:3
From
the
rising
of
the
sun
to its
setting,
let the Name of the Lord be praised.

A hot summer Sunday

                                                                        Collect of the Day
                                            + St David’s Mission Statement
God, you have taught
us to keep
all your command-ments by loving you
and our neighbor, without exception. Give us the  grace of your Holy Spirit that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart,
and united to one another
with pure affection….
Recently on NPR I heard
that the mother of maybe
the Palestinian boy who
was killed quoted as saying
“Murder is murder,
whether you are
Israeli or Palestinian.”
It’s really interesting &
sad to me that I cannot
find the quote on the web...
