Today the western church celebrates Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino, circa 540 who wrote Rule of Saint Benedict which has informed and largely formed western monasticism.

                         All of the Anglicanism, and 

certainly the Book of Common Prayer- right down to the name!- is infused with the Benedictine spirit. And the first, the very first word of 
the rule, the school of the 
Lord's service, is: “Listen."
