Today we remember two different Bishops of Lincoln: Hugh (1140-1200) a French Benedictine Carthusian monk who often is represented with the swan that apparently appeared at his ordination (episcopal, I would assume!... no, not the swan - the office he was being ordained into!) and which became his pet, and Robert Grosseteste (1175-1253) an Englishman born in Suffolk .

                                                    Psalm 105:3

     Glory in Gods holy Name,
     let the hearts of those
     who seek the Lord
     rejoice.
Holy God,
our greatest treasure,
you blessed
Hugh and Robert
Bishops of Lincoln,
with wise and cheer-
ful boldness for
the proclamation
of your Name
to rich and poor alike:
Grant that all
who minister
in your Name
may serve
with
diligence,
discipline,
& humility,
fearing
nothing but
the loss of you
In his sermon on All Saints Sunday, Fr Jason recalled the the hodgepodge that is the Com-munion of Saints which is reflected in us, the Body of Christ - like them, we are educated
and not so much, sophisticated and simple, heart-centered and head-centered, amiable and irascible, (like Jerome, Bill Mahedy's favorite example!) easy going and uptight, singers and those unable to carry a tune in
a bucket, contemplative and antsy (some-
times at the same time!) We are all so varied and different, individually called to be one with and in Christ and to service in Him, to "comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable."

The images I found happily reflect that diversity - the elongated and graceful
image of Hugh looks French and regal and sophisticated,as does his unusual pet,
while the illumination of Robert is more
Anglo-Saxon looking, and rougher, remind-
ing us of the historical time. Together they recall the amazing inclusiveness of our God who calls us beyond our barriers and limi-tations to rejoice in the very life of the
Blessed Trinity today and for ever.
