    1775 - 1852,  

  Bishop of Ohio 

   & of Illinois.  

There being only one Episcopal seminary in America, in 1824, Chase started Bexley Hall (still one of 10 seminaries of the US Epiiscopal Church) to form priests for the newly-settled frontier, and  founded and became first President of Kenyon College, a liberal arts college still in existence

today. Chase left Kenyon and his position as Bishop of Ohio in 1831. In 1835, Episco-palians in new towns west of Ohio formed a diocese and elected him as the first Bishop of Illinois. In 1840 was  found-er and Presdent of Jubilee College which closed in 1846 but remains an historic sie in Jubilee College State Park.  From 1843 until his death Chase was Presiding Bishop, the head of the US Episcopal church.
