*Absalom Jones, 

  1746–1818.                   Born a house slave in Delarare, in 1766 he married Mary King & purchased her free-

dom. Sixteen years later, in 1782,  he purchased 

his own. He began the formation of a black congregation in 1792 which became St Thomas African Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. In 1795 he became a deacon and in 1801 he was ordained the first black Episcopal priest .
