mer, primarily respon-
sible in 1549 for the first Book of Common Prayer which put wor-ship in the language of the people. A man with a complicated legacy, he was burned at the stake on this date in 1556 , either hertic or martyr, after the crown had reverted to Roman Cathol-icism under Mary I, “Bloody Mary.”
