______________________The Invitatory_
Lord,
open
our
lips;
And
our mouth
proclaim your praise
And so it really does begin, these 3 holiest days in Christianity. The Romans call today Holy Thursday and it surely is, but we Episcopalians call it Maundy Thursday, from Jesus’ mandatum or command. After all day on a dusty road. (Israel gets about as much rainfall as we do in CA so it's often dusty) a slave would wash the guest's feet before dinner, hospitality being paramount for survival. Before supper on this particular night - shortly before one of his disciples that was there in the room would betray him - and with a kiss as a sign to the Roman soldiers - Jesus stripped to the waist and washed the disciples feet.
Afterward, after showing them, he told them: "A new commandment I give you - that you love one another as I have loved you.” You call me Master and Rabbi, Teacher and Leader and so I am. This is what that looks like - for me, for you. If you wish to be numero uno and in charge, this is your example, this is that looks like.
