Born in 1831 of Jewish parents in Lithuania, he im-migrated to America, was ordained a priest in 1859 after going to seminary in New York, consecrated Biship in 1877, & died in Tokyo in 1906. ]He resigned his see in 1883 after being stricken wth
paralysis, but he none-
theless completed his translation of the Bible into Wenli “typing some 2,000 pages with the middle finger of his partially crippled hand. (Which made me a favorite saint of George Higgins!)  Four days before his death he said ‘I have sat in this chair for over 20 years. It seemed very hard at first. But God knew best. He kept me for the work for which I am best fitted.’”  ((Holy Women, Holy Men) 
           All these years I had somehow missed that he had beem paralyzed for so long! Now wonder he was a favorite of the inimitable Geoege Higgins!
