The First Bishop of Melanesia.  Born in 1827, he and his companions died on this date  in 

1871 as a result of the odious  slave trade  which, was “technical-ly illegal in the South Pacific at that time, but the laws were only laxly enforced 

and in fact slave-raiding was a flourishing business.” 

Today the American church remembers Thomas Bray, English priest and missionary, 1730.

Thomas Bray  
was responsible for the oversight of the church in the colony of Maryland and founded the  Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts.
