(Thursday 3//.2017) Gregory Bishop of Nyssa, circa 334–394.

                 ______Collect for Guidance__

__in

     and move,
         and have our being _____

Gregory of Nyssa, together with his brother Basil the Great & Gregory
of Nazianzus,
are known as The Cappadocian Fathers, fought for the accept-ance of the Nicene Creed which states that God is not one single Person but is a Trinity of Persons,  Father, Son  & Holy Spirit, all  separate, distinct & distinctive Persons, a community of love flowing into & through & among one another.  And us if , Gregory of Nyssa, together with his brother Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus, are known as The Cappadocian Fathers, fought for the acceptance of the Nicene Creed which asserted, and asserts, that God is not one  single Person but three, Father, Son and Holy  Spirit, all  separate, distinct and and distinctive Persons, a community of love flowing into and through and among one another. And us if, no,   when we be grafted in.

Concepts create idols;
only wonder comprehends anything. People kill one another for concepts.
Wonder makes us all fall on our knees.

Today the church remembers Anskar, 801–865 “apostle to the Scandinavians” whose work was pretty much a bust, but which laid a foundation for the future.

                           Antiphon: Psalm 75

God
does
not
jud-
ge
by what the eye sees
but in truth and equity.

Keep your
church from
discouragement
in the day of small things, knowing that when you have
begun a good work, you will bring it to a fruitful conclusion  - Collect

Hildegard von Bingen, German Benedictine abbess, mystic, visionary writer, composer, and philosopher. "Doctor of the Church" in the Roman Church. Born September 16, 1079 and died in 1179, 81 years and one day later.

                        Based on the Collect
          for Saturday Morning Prayer

Almighty God, after your work of   creation,
you rested
sanctified
a day of
rest for all
your
creatures,
grant that
we may put away
all anxieties and rest in you.

                        Matthew 26:48

“The
man
whom
I kiss
is the
man,
arrest
him.”

May
we,
follow-
ing
her
ex-
ample,
seek
after
your
wisdom
and live
according
to your way

I had gone looking for a picture that showed the hubbub & the movement  & chaos and  noise of the crowd that night, maybe because it is the season of party con-ventions, & I am reminded how quickly the unthinking throngs become dangerous. When I found this picture  by Giotto I thought it was the one. But then I came across this
statue of the moment of betrayal frozen in time in all it’s in-timacy and that was it. A moment. A man. A decision.
Up close & person-
al. Arresting.  Our lives as followers
of Christ are lived
in the midst of community but each
decision, moment by moment, is a mo-
ment of choice by
us alone.

Today the American Episcopal Church remembers Cornelius Hill (1(834- 1907) the first great Oneida chief to be born in Wisconsin, after the government forced the Oneida peoples west from New York State. In 1903 he became the first Oneida to be ordained an Episcopal priest, repeating his vows in the Oneida language.

                                                                 Canticle 19

O Ruler
of the Universe,
Lord God,
 great deeds
are they that you
have done, surpassing
human understanding.
Your ways are ways of
righteousness and truth, O King of all the ages.

…our loving God,
you raised up your
priest Cornelius Hill,
last hereditary chief of
the Oneida nation,
to shepherd and
                            defend his people against
                         attempts to scatter them
                     in the wilderness: Help
us, like him, to be dedicated
      to truth & honor..- Collect

Remember today the Martyrs of Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston NC who were killed a year ago tonight.

                     Canticle 10, & LJB translation
                                 of Matthew 18:21-22

My thoughts
are not your
thoughts,
nor your
ways my
ways, says
the Lord
Then Peter
came and
said to him”
Lord… how often do I
have to forgive these idiots?”
          Jesus answered…

Almighty and Everlasting God, who kindled the flame of your love in the hearts of your holy martyrs
of Mother Emmanuel; Grant to us…. a like power of love…
                            Collect of martyrs

Pray for an end to the
violence & hatred that
infect the human heart,
for an end to the divisive-
ness in our political and
social discourse. Pray also
for a renunciation of the
use of racism xenophobia
& division as a political tool.
