Friday, March 24, 2017. Today we remember some more contemporary Christians who died for their faith: Óscar Romero (19170-1980) and the Martyrs of San Salvador.

Grant that we, walking in the way of 

the cross may find it none other than the way of live and peace.

On 12 March 1977, Rutilio Grande, a Jesuit priest and personal friend of Romero who had been creating self-reliance groups among the poor, was assassina-ted. His death had a pro-found impact on Ro-mero, who later stat-ed, "When I look-ed at Rutilio lying there dead I thought, 'If they have killed him for doing what he did, then I too have to walk the same path.’  Romero urged the government to investigate, but they ignored his request.” Radicalized for the love of Christ and his people, Romero began speak-ing out against poverty, social in-justice, assassinations and torture by the government. He was shot to death on this day in 1980 while mass on.The previous day he had preached a sermon  saying, “A bishop will die but, the Church of God ,which is the people will never perish.” (Thanks in part to Wikipedia!) 

In 2010 

the United Nations  General Assembly proclaimed 24 March 

as the "International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims” On this day in 1980  Ócsar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, who was shot to death saying mass.

Pray today for compassion for all in need, for social justice, for the poor, the oppres-sed and the mar-ginalized, for an end to violence in speech, in statute and in deed. Pray also that we may see other as bro-thers & sisters.

Today the American Episcopal Church commemorates James Weldon Johnson, 1871- 1938 Author, poet and lawyer, , diplomat and educator civil rights activist and leader in the NAACP.

                           Bernard Mezkei 

was born in 1861 in Port-uguese East Africa (Moz-ambique) in 1861, and died on this date in  Marondera Zimbabwe which remains a place of pilgrimage to this day.

known as The Cappadocian Fathers. Dudes largely have written history and that, along with the scourge of clericalism, has impoverished us, causing  only a portion of the story to be remembered.. And so, we also 

commemorate  in this au-gust group., Marcina the Younger (c.327-379)

celebrated in her own right, but also, and importantly, as the older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa. (Each is celebrated  epreately in  the Episcopal Calendar but the Lutherans celerbate them tody as a group, surely in keeping with the Easter Churches.  Pray today for the Eastern Orthodox Church and for sisters!
