St Ambrose Bishop of Milan (337-397)

                                                  Isaiah 6:8 

I heard 

the voice 

of the 

Lord

saying, 

“Whom 

  shall 

  I send?

  And who 

  will go for us?"  And I said, 

                         "Here am I; send me"

Ambrose was busy 

advocating peace 

between 2opposing 

factions in the con-

tentious election 

of a new Bishop 

of Milan. Sudden-

ly they all  decided

that he was their

 guy, and both 

sides started yel-

ling Ambrose shall 

be our bishop!”  

The only trouble 

was he wasn’t 

even baptized, 

much less a 

presbyter, so 

they quickly

baptized him and, on Decem-ber 7, 373  St

Ambrose-to-be

was consecrated their Bishop.

* As we sneak up on All Saints Day, 

I was reminded today that the Bishop was a favorite saint of 

George Higgins because after 

becoming paralyzed, he cont-

inued his work, completing  

his translation of the Bible 

into the vernacular using 

one finger of one hand.   

For the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too.
