Ferguson.

   1842-1916

Born in 

South Carolina 

and raised in Liberia, West Africa, he 

became a teacher & a priest and became the firstAfrican American to become Bishop of Liberia and he was the first black bishop to sit in the House of Bishops. 

In 1889 he founded Cuttington a  private university 

in Suacoco, Liberia. 

Founded in 1889 as Cuttington College, 

it is the oldest private, 

co-educational, four-

year, degree-granting institution 

in sub-Saharan Africa.
