I had forgotten this legend quoted today in 

Give Us This Day and refered to in the 

collect quoted above: 

Lawrence, was one of the deacons 

who was responsibile for overseeing the dis-

tribution of alms to the poor. the precept 

of Rome, gave him 3 days by to produce all 

the wealth of the church.  When the day 

came,  Lawrence had gathered in the square 

the poor + the sick the blind, lepers widows 

+ orphans. “Here” he proclaimed, “are the 

treasures of the church.”
