        1775-1852

Born in New Hampshire, 

he became a Congrega-tionalist minister who fell in love with the Book of Common Prayer and was ordained an Epis-

copal priest. He started the first Episcopal par-ish in New Orleans,  started Kenyon College & Bexley Hall Seminary 

after becoming Bishop of Ohio. He resigned his see and began ministering in southern Michigan, was later elected Bishop of Illinois,  AND served as our 

6th Presiding Bishop!  (We’re up to 27 now: Michael Curry is the first African-American  PB.  He was preceded in office by the first woman to be PB, Katherine Jefforts-Schori.)
