                  1831-1906

 Born of Jewish parents in Lithuania, he studied to become a rabbi in Germany before he converted to Christ-

inaity. He immigrated to the United States, was ordained a priest in 1859, and in n 1877 he was consecrated Bishop of Shanghai. He resigned his see in 1883 after becoming paralyzed. He nontheless finished  

his tran-
slation 

of the Bible, typing with the middle finger  

of one 

crippled 

hand. 

He is buried there beside his wife whose name I was not able 
to discover, which requires no comment.
