Hilda was abbess of Whitby a “double 

house” of both nuns 

& monks as was the Celtic tradition. In 664 the Council of Whitby 

was convened there 

to decide between the 

Roman practice and 

the Celtic traditions.  

The former reigned,

 which resulted in the union the Roman  and 

Celtic missions in England.

                  Pray for all monks and nuns, for the 

                wide  diversity of Christian traditions 

                and for unity within that diversity.
