The Venerable Bede
was a scholar and monk with a “wide ranging interest in history, gram-mar, metrics, chronology and Scripture.” … His Ecclesiastical History of the English People remains the primary source for the period 597-731 when Anlgo-Saxon culture developed & Christianity triumphed. “
He died on May 25, which was the Eve of the Ascension in 735, while dictating an English translation of the Gospel of John. I learned this morning that his bones were scattered during the Reformation, though his tomb remains in Durham cathedral. Another reminder of the danger of fanaticism of whatever stipe.
Pray for those who through the darkness keep alive the light of learning.
