Psalm 69:7
Let not those who trust in you be put to
sh-ame
thr-ough
me, Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you
be disgraced because of me, O God of Israel.
Theodore
was a Greek monk from Tarsus, the
city in which Paul was born (in present day Turkey) sent from Rome in 668 to be the 7th Archbishop of Canterbury. Rowan Williams is #104, the first Welshman. (Oops - Alerted by Carol I remembered that it's now Justin Welby. Sorry your amazing grace! I guess that makes him #105...)Remember, The Council of Whitby was in 663 which decided in favor of Roman Christianity instead of Celtic? Theodore “brought unity to the two strains of Christianity."
It’s interesting to consider that, all these years laster, one day a woman will sit on the seat of St Augustine. As a sign of unity within the Anglican Communion, though, I wouldn’t hold my breath... Nonetheless, St Hilda of Whitby, who obeyed the Council decision for the Roman way, but preferred the Celtic,
has to be smiling at the thought…

In this current day of hyper polari-zation, may “we maintain this middle way not as a compromise for the sake of peace, but as a comprehension for the sake of truth:” Collect for Richard Hooker, who came nearly a thousand years after Theodore and who also lived in “ a day of bitter controversy.”
Pray for Justin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and for all arch-bishops & bishops, especially for Jim our Bishop; for the Anglican Communion; for those respons-ible for the organization & ad-ministration of the church; &
for all church schools. (Thanks as
ever to the New Lutheran Book of Feasts….)
