to be termed “Great,” 

he assumed the term

“servant of the servants 

of God;”  after whom 

gregorian chanted 

is named.

It was Pope Gregory 

who sent Augustine of

Canterbury on a “mission 

to the Anglo-Saxons.”  

He was the first Arch-

bishop of Canterbury 

of the Church in 

England, then the 

Church of England.
