"one of the men..."

                                   Acts 1:21-16

it was necessary that one of the men who ac-companied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us, should become a witness to his resurrection & the lot fell upon Matthias & he was counted among with the eleven apostles.
and the long shadow of the
                       resurrection falls upon day the
                       evening when the first female
is becoming a candidate for the
                       Presidency of the united States
                       of America.

Today the church celebrates the composers Johan Sebastian Bach, 1750 George Frederick Handel, 1757 no 1759, and Henry Purcell, 1695

                                   2 Corinthians 4:7

But we
have this
treasure
in clay
jars, so
that it
may be
made clear that
this extraordinary power belongs
to God and does not come from us.
Be
with
all those
who write or make music …
that we on
earth may
glimpse your beauty and know the inexhaust-ible riches of your new creation in Jesus Christ
                                                   -Collect of the day
                                                      Almighty and eternal God,
so draw our hearts to you, so
guide our minds, so fill our imag-
inations, so control our wills, that
we may be wholly  yours, utterly ded-
icated to you; and then use us, we
pray,  as you will, and always to your
glory and the welfare of your people

Wednesday (William Reed Huntington Priest, 1909, ecumenist, statesman and liturgical scholar)

                  Canticle 11, Matthew 27:46b

The
sun
will
no
more
be
your
light by day; by night you will not need
the brightness of the moon. The
Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.

         I need thy presence every passing hour;
what but by grace can foil the tempter’s
power? Where is death’s sting? Where,
         grave, thy victory? Through clouds
and sunshine, Lord abide with me.
                            Hymn 662

          I  want
           you
           to be
           wise
           in
           what
           is good,
          and guileless in evil.

Today we remember Joachim and Anne, parents of The Blessed Virgin Mary

    For
    God
    alone
    my

    silence
    waits

Evening Prayer of St James

                                                 Matthew 10:16

See,
I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves:
so be wise as serpents & innocent as doves.

St James the Apostle, brother of John, sons of Zebedee, among the small group to witness the Transfiguration of Jesus and the first of the Twelve to suffer martyrdom. By tradition his body was taken to Compostela, which remains a pilgrimage site to this day.

                                                          Psalm 34:8

  Taste
  & see
   that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him.
Almond torte marked with the cross of St James

At the very bottom of our diocesan shield there
is a shell, symbol of St James, sinceRobert
Woltersdorff , our first diocesan Bishop
(1974) came from St James La Jolla.
