Today we remember Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers, born about 315, died 367, a champion of the orthodox teaching of the Church as proclaimed at Nicaea against Arianism which arose in the early 4th century and held that Jesus, while the Son of God, was created by God the Father, is distinct from the Father and is therefore subordinate to the Father.

                                                                                         Canticle 11

   Arise,
   shine,
   for
   your
   light
   has
   come,
   and
   the glory
   of the Lord
   has dawned upon you.
Keep us steadfast
in the true faith which we profes-
sed at our baptism,
that we may rejoice
in having you for our Father, & may abide in your Son,
in the fellowship
of the Holy Spirit

* The name Hilary derives from the word hilaris, cheerful, hence the graphics and the colors. The first is a depiction of a Jewish woman blessing the shabbat candles at sundown on Friday night. From www.chabad.ord: “Darkness is settling upon the world; the workweek is coming to a close. A week of activity, a week of growth, a tiring week. But as the sun goes down on Friday, a new day is being ushered in: the day for which we toiled the entire week, a day of rest and tranquility, the holy Shabbat. Greeting the Shabbat (and also Jewish holidays) are girls and women across the globe. Shortly before sunset they light candles, which usher in peace and blessing to their homes and to the world."
