1761 – 1834,
"Shoemaker by trade, but scholar, linguist & missionary
by God's training,” was a British
born Baptist mis-sionary to India where he spent
41 years, and also rememebred as a social reformer, cultural, anthro-pologist & founder of the Serampore College & University, the first degree awarding University in India. He translated the Bible into Bengali & Sanskrit & the New Test-ament in the other Indian languages
& dialects, as well as completing
a Bengali-English dictionary.

I work on a campus that is shared by William Carey International University. Our school's buildings are named for Amy Carmichael (K-6) and Samuel Zwemer(7-12).
