Evening Prayer of a rainy, blustery Friday

                                                                                                          Psalm 141:2
Let my prayer
be set forth
in your
sight as incense,
the lifting of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

A wonderfully rainy Friday

                                                       Proverbs 1:1-4,6
Does not wisdom call, & does not under-stand-ing raise her voice?  On the heights, beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand, beside the gates of the town, at the en-trance of the portals she cries out: To
you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that hear... Hear, for I will speak...

Evening Prayer

                                               Psalm 134:2
          Lift
          up
          your
          hands
          in the
          holy

          and
          bless
          the
          Lord:
             the Lord who
                made  heaven & earth,
                     bless  you out of Zion.

In the Episcopal Calendar today we commemorate George Herbert (1593-1633) “”pastor, poet and a priest in your temple”

                     George Herbert's Collect

Give us
grace,
we pray,
joyfully
to perform
the tasks
you have
given us
to do, knowing
that nothing is menial or
common that is done for Your sake

Tuesday as our eyes behold the vesper ight

                                                                                                                    Psalm 124:8

Our
help is
in the
Name
of the
Lord

Tuesday

I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where
                                 is my help to come?

My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
                                  Psalm 121:1&2
My friend Marion suggested that today the psalmist
would say "the maker of heavens and earth. "

The Feast of St Matthias, who won the lottery to replace Judas Iscariot. The qualifications were that he be someone who had been with Jesus and the other 11 from the John’s Baptism of Jesus to Jesus' Ascension. The other candidate was “Joseph, called Barsabas, also known as Justus” who surely deserves his own feast day.

                                       1 Samuel 16:1,3 andActs 1:26
The Lord said....  I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.
... and to lot fell on Matthias and he
was added to the eleven apostles.
I was thinking of Matthias as I read psalm 80 at Morning Prayer, which asks God to “behold and tend this vine,” and of those first apostles who were just feeling their way forward, and of St David’s as we feel our way forward in our search for a new rector in the context of our new mission statement, though not a new mission here in this place: “to follow Jesus, loving our neighbor as ourselves, without exception.”

grant that your Church , being delivered from false apostles, may always
be guided by faithful
and true pastors.               Collect for St Matthias Day

Friday night

                                   Psalm 107:2-4
Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed now proclaim
that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe.

He gathered them out of the lands; from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
Some wandered in desert wastes;
they found no way to a city
where they might dwell.

Evening Prayer

    I John 2:8

The darkness is passing away and the true light is already coming into the world.

The person commemorated today in Give Us this Day is Guido di Pietro c. 1395-1455 a Dominican friar and artist. His name in religion was Fra Giovanni but we know him by his nickname, Fra Angelico, so named for his angelic piety and his artistic talents. An early precursor of the Italian Renaissance, he believed that painting was the true expression of his religious vocation.

Martin Luther, renewer of the church 1483-1546

                          Dignes es (BCP Pg 93)
Splendor  and honor and glory... are yours by right,
O Lord our God, for you created everything that is, and by your will they were
created and have their being.

Pray for
the continuous cleansing of the church, for Augustinians., for an ever-new discovery of the good news of god in christ and for the unity of the church of God.

In the Anglican Communion today we remember Janani Luwum, born 1922, Archbishop of Uganda who was martyred by Idi Amin in 1977

Psalm 89:1

O Lord,
for ever
will I sing,
from age
to age
my mouth
shall tell
of your
faithfulness

“I do not know how long I shall occupy this chair; I live as thought here will be no tomorrow... while the opportunity is there I preach with all my might and my conscience is clear before God."

Today in the Episcopal Calendar we remember Absalom Jones (1746-1818) who was a house slave born in Delaware who bought his freedom in 1784 (ah, capitalism, extending even to human flesh!) and was the first black person (MAN in those days!) to be ordained (no easy road!) an Episcopal priest.

                                                                                                                                 Psalm 146:9
