On the civic calendar today
is what was called
Columbus Day
when I was little,
which is slowly
but happily
morphing
into Indigenous Peoples Day,
On last night's news I leaned
that although Columbus never
even set foot ashore, there
are nonetheless some 70 statues of him in America, one of which is here in Balboa Park. I need not say that it is impossible to “discover” something that is already inhabited,. You can be ignorant, of it, but the enduring trouble comes when those who know better continue to perpetuate and teach the myth rather than reality. When that happens, misinformation on it becomes disinformation, at which point it's time to go back to the verse.
