Evening

  Psalm 124: 8

Our help
is in the
Name
of the Lord,
the maker
of heaven
and earth.

Today remember in your heart the life and ministry of Bill Mahedy who was born today in 1936 and died of cancer from serving in Vietnam 2011.

                                                     Collect for Peace

  O
  God,
  the
  author
  of
  peace
  and
  lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life
and to serve you is prefect freedom

Shepherd  of a varied flock,
Sing  praise, O Lord, to Thee.

Black-robed, in silence,
khakied chaplain
(chopper blades roar)
shirt-sleeved now in
concrete jungle ,OSA to SOB.
Sing praise,my soul, to Thee.

Shepherd of  assassins
and seekers,
students and priests,
those touched by evil
and those steeped in it,
of  the spoiler and the spoiled,
Sing praise my soul, to Thee.

Companion of those perched on the verge
of adulthood, wings outstretched,
and those old beyond their years;
the despairing  and the faith filled
both, Monastery to marriage bed.
Sing praise, my God  to Thee.

Keyboard pulpit (the Word
springing to birth)
Coffeeshop confessional
bringing absolution and peace,
showing the Way
to the newborn baptized
in water and hope,
to the reborn,
baptized in blood ,
thrust into the depths of the tomb
and resurrected in Pascal mystery,
Sing praise, my soul, to Thee.

Led through the desert,
sustained by heavenly fare
- a taste and a sip, yet enough -
- the feeder, fed,
- the wounded healed.
- Traces of grace shimmer
- and dapple the dark path,.

Shepherd of a varied flock,
sing praise, my soul, of thee.

evening

                                          Antiphon on the
                               Magnificat for today

How glori-ous
are
the
apostles Peter and Paul,
who in life loved one another &
in death rejoice together for evermore.

The Feast of St Peter and St Paul, Apostles, enduring examples of the diversity of personality and calling within the one faith. One of the earliest of saints days observed, it dates to 258.

   Psalm 66: 9
you,
O Lord,
 have
proved us;
you have
tried us
just as
silver
is tried.
May each one of us, instructed by their teaching & example & knit together by your Spirit, stand firm upon the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ
our Lord....
             -Based on the collect
Pray today for the continuation                               of apostolic zeal & spirit.
Tradition holds that both men were martyred in Rome on the same day, Peter, crucified upside down and Paul, as Roman citizen, beheaded, which sounds quite contemporary, sadly enough.

strength & my song, and he has become my salvation.

                                              Luke 22: 31-32

I have prayed
that your faith may not fail and you; once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.

Today the Episcopal Church remembers Isabel Florence Hapgood, Ecumenist and Journalist, 1851- 1928

                                   Acts 7:17, 21 & Canticle 10
As the time came near for the ful-fill-ment of the promise that god has made to Abra-ham,…. another king who had not known Joseph ruled over Egypt ….
who forced our ancestors to abandon their infants so they would die….  at that time Moses
was born…
Pharaoh’s daughter
adopted him & brought him up as her own son.
 ….  FOR my thoughts
are not
your thoughts, nor your
ways my  ways, says the Lord

Isabel Florence Hapgood, was born to a wealthy family in Boston Isabel, a lifelong Episcopalian, fell in love with Russia and the Russian Orthodox Divine Liturgy. She spent  11 years  “translating the subtleties of Russian into equally subtle English.”

                                                                              Luke 22:24, 26-27
The
kings
of the
Gentiles
lord it over them But it must not be so with you;
rather, the greatest among you
must become like the youngest &
the leader like the one who serves.
I am among you a one who serves.

Today on the Episcopal Calendar we celebrate the life of James Weldon Johnson 1871-1938 Poet, Educator, Diplomat, Organizer for the NAACP... In collaboration with with his brother Rosamond, who was a composer, he wrote Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, often called "The African American National Anthem” which was written in celebration of President Lincoln’s birthday.

   Psalm 105:4

Search
for the
Lord
and his
strength;

in the Name of Jesus…  - Collect

shall
I do?
I will
send
my
beloved

Evelyn Underhill, teacher and writer, 12/6/1878-8/15/1941

                                                    Acts 1:7-8

  It
  is
  not
  for
  you
  to
  know
  the times or periods
  that the Father has set
But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you
and you will be my witnesses

How I love the mixture of the beautiful and the squalid in gardening. It makes it so lifelike.

Remembering Martin Buber who died today in 1965 in Jerusalem. Born in Vienna, Austria on February 8, 1878, the Jewish philosopher theologian was the author of I and Thou. (Thank you for remembering Give Us This Day!)

                                     Psalm 23: 2b, 3a

he leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul and guides me

Saturday

                                                         Canticle 12*
                                              A Song of Creation

God saw
everything
that he had
made and
behold, it
was very good.

                      * Why Canticle 12 on Saturdays?
Traditionally, while Friday is the day that we commemorate the death of Jesus and Sunday is
the celebration of the resurrection, Saturday
is the Sabbath day, when we remember that
God rested from his labors on the seventh
day and sanctified it as a day of rest.
