Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

                                                                   Psalm 66:3

All
the earth bows down before you, sings
to you, sings out your Name.

Nothing is known about these two followers of Jesus except their names. According to legend they were both martyred on the same day in Persia. It’s ironic, given the dearth of any information at all, that St Jude has become known as the patron of hopeless causes.

Prayers are suggested for the obscure, the forgotten and the unknown who work for the kingdom of God. For holiness of life. And for faithfulness to our Baptismal promise to “continue in the apostle’s teach-ing, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers.” (BCP Pg 305)

Nearing Sunday evening

                                                           Psalm 103:13
As a father cares for
his
child-ren
so does the Lord care for those who fear him.

Last Sudnay in October

                                                                 Collect of the Day
In-crease in us the gifts of faith, hope and charity and, that we may obtain what you promise,
make us love what you command
                 I finished this and started to go away, but came back and struggled with it. I Really don’t like the feel of MAKE US LOVE what you command.  I DO NOT LIKE  the brute force feel of it since God never forces. True, the choices are sometimes pretty stark - choose this day between life and death, between what Leads to life and what Leads to death...  And sometimes we go a ways own the wrong path That seems to be how we learn that it’s the wrong path....Think of the beloved Peter blurting out, on the night before Jesus died, “Damnit! I don’t even KNOW the guy!”
                 So I tried changing it - I tired ENABLE US to love, HELP US to love, MAY WE love and SHOW US HOW to love. And in the end, I finally decided that “make us love” contains all of that. Commands there are but abiding help is always there too. Another verse that was a possibility today was Haggai 2:5: "My spirit abides among you, do not fear." Among you. a whole other train f thought! For another day

Saturday

                                                                    I Corinthians 15:19

               If
               for
               this
               life
               only
               we
               have
               hoped
               in
               Christ,
               we are
               of all people most to be pitied.

And I suspect that it also applies the other way 'round -  if for the next life only we have hoped in Christ, we are also to be pitied, having missed half the deal!

Thomas Cranmer, (1489-1556) Archbishop of Canterbury, and principally responsible for The Book of Common Prayer of 1549

                                    The General Thanksgiving BCP Pg 101 &125

We thank you
for
our
cre-ation, pres-erva-tion and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for the redemption
of the world by our Lord
       Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace
and for the hope of glory.

"Thomas Cranmer is of importance beyond the Anglican Communion because of the enormous influence of the Book of Common Prayer on the language of worship in every English-speaking denomination. In the Episcopal Church Cranmer has his own day, on March 21,the day he was burned at the stake under Queen Mary 1, ironically, the daughter of King  Henry VIII by Catherine."

St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) Founder of the Order of Discalced Carmelites; mystic, author and guide.To Roman Catholics she is known as a Doctor the Church since 1970. In the Lutheran New Book.... she is called a Renewer of the Church and is described, "a most attractive person, witty, frank and affectionate."*

    Psalm 5:13
all who
take
refuge
in you
will be
glad;
they will
sing out
their joy
for ever.

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee
All things are passing;
God never changeth;
Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting;
Alone God sufficeth.

Lines Written in St Therea’s Breviary

 *A favorite story of mine, because it makes me laugh and gives me hope, is that one day as Teresa was traveling to one of the 17 convents she founded, her carriage ended up in a ditch. She got out of the overturned carriage. shook her fist heavenward and said  “If this is how you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few!”   It's probably not literally true, but as the old Mason Williams song said "Who needs truth if its dull?"

                 faith,

                 love
               abide,
                these
               three;
              and the
             greatest of these is love.

The harvest
is plent-iful but
the laborers are few.Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

St Philip, First century Deacon and Evangelist

                                                                          Psalm 142:3a

When my spirit languishes within me you know my path

The story about Philip is found, appropriately, in The Acts of the Apostles (6:1-6, 8:40) I love the story about him being sent to “a wilderness road,” (he must have wondered what in the World he was doing there!) coming upon the Ethiopian, explaining the scriptural passage to him and finally baptizing him, all at the man’s request. My favorite part of the story is that after Philip did what he was called to do, immediately “when the Ethiopian came out of the water “(right after being baptized ) “the Spirt of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azostus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.”  God has work for us to do, work that he chooses . He's in charge . And whether He’s sending us somewhere,  we know not why, or whether we’re on our way to some destination, as we go , by both word and deed, and attitude , we proclaim the good news as we go, and lives are changed.
