Celebrate today - it comes one every four years! John Cassian, Abbot of Marseilles, 433, born around 365.

                                                             Psalm 80:8b,9

You  have  brought a vine out of Egypt
You prepared
 the ground for it,
it took root & filled the land.

Call us
to turn the gaze
of the eyes of our
soul always toward
you, that we may
abide in your love
     - Collect

St John Cassian ”struggled with the problems of living
the Christian life in a time when the world seems to be
falling apart.“  We too live, as Bishop Mathes said
yesterday, in a “rock -throwing, insult-hurling, bomb-
throwing world., and “to be a people not of rocks, but
of the water.”

Sunday Evening Prayer

                                                      Psalm 34:8

          Taste
          and
          see
          that
          the
          Lord
          is good;
happy are they who trust in him.

The Third Sunday in Lent

                                                   Psalm 93:5

Mightier
than the
sound of
many waters;
mightier than
the breakers
 of the sea;
mightier is the
Lord who dwells on high.

Today we remember George Herbert, 1593- 1633, priest and poet

   1 Corinthians 2:16

It
 is to
peace
that God
 has called you.

               “Nothing
                 is  little
                 in Gods service. “

Friday evening

                                    Psalm 73:24

        You
        will
        guide
        me
        by
        your
        counsel,
        and afterward
        receive me with glory.

Today we commemorate Emily Malbone Morgan (1862- 1937) Prophetic witness

                                                  Psalm 69:34b

You
who
seek
God,
your
hearts
will
live.

This image depicts St David’s Eighth Station of the Cross: "Jesus mets the woman of Jerusalem." At each stations our children say in versicle and response form:
          “Jesus, we wee not there”.
“But we are here now, remembering. “

Emily Morgan “helped to establish the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross,  so that women who live in the world might devote themselves to intercessory prayer, social justice, Christian unity, and simplicity of life.

Our own Margaret
has long been a companion of the holy cross, both In the strict sense and also literally.

Evening Prayer of St Matthias

                                          Acts 20:28

Keep watch
over yourselves & over the
flock of which the
Holy Spirit
made you
overseers,
to shepherd
the church of God
which he obtained with
the blood of his own Son.
After the selection to fill the Judas Iscariot,'s spot,
we know as much about St Matthias as we do about St Joseph surnamed Justus, called Barsabas, who was the also ran.
Which is nothing really. True leadership
turns out to be different than we
thought. Or think.

St Mathias, who was chosen after the Resurrection to become the 12th apostle in place of Judas Iscariot.

                           Antiphon on Psalm 80
                                  for St Mathias Day

 O Lord, look down from heaven;
behold and tend this vine.

A salubrious
reminder
that while
each of us
is beloved,
none  of us is
indispensable.

Tuesday

                                               Psalm 62:1a

For
God
alone
my
soul
in
silence
waits

Monday evening

                                                             Psalm 65:8b

you
make
the
dawn
and
the
dusk
to sing for joy.

On this date in 1732 George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, was born; in 1862 Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as President of the Confederacy; and n 1932 Adolf Hitler was the Nazi Party candidate for the presidential elections in Germany.

                                                    Psalm 56:3, 4a

Whenever I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I
praise, in God I trust
and will not be afraid

I routinely delete the end of verse4 because it continues “for what can flesh do to me?” My resounding answer is PLENTY!! as you can see in this little refugee child seeking comfort in the outline of her mother. What flesh does to flesh is terrible and if God hates anything it is this, the breaking of the second  part of the Great Commandment.

Friday in the First Week of Lent

                                              Psalm 40:4

          Happy
                are
                they
                who
               trust in the Lord

The days really are getting longer!

                            Antiphon on Psalm 19

The heavens declare the glory of  God and the firmament shows forth his handiwork.
One day tells its tale to another,
and one night imparts knowledge
to another Although they have
no words or language, their
voices have gone out to
the ends of the earth.

Today we remember Martin Luther, Augustinian monk and theologian, 1483-1546

                                   Psalm 50:14

Offer
to
God
a sac-
rifice
of
thanks-
giving
and make good
your vows to the Most High.

May we
too work
“to reform
and renew
your Church
in light of
your Word-Collect

"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,
I would still plant my apple tree."

Evening Prayer

                       Corinthians 2:4,5
My speech and
my proc-lamation [to you] were with plausible words of wisdom but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might rest not on human
wisdom but on the power of God.
