Wednesday night

Turn

  again

   to

    your

       rest,

         O

           my

               soul,

for the Lord  has treated you well.

Wednesday, 28 October, 2020, The Feast of Saint Simon and Saint Jude, apostles

                                                        ______________saiah 26:11b-13a_

 …. he will speak
in his people to
    whom he has
     saidThis is
  rest; give rest
    to the weary;
          and this is
      repose; yet
they would not
      hear. There-
  fore the word
       of the Lord
              will be
                to  them “Precept upon precept
                   precept upon preceptline upon
line line upon line, here a little,
                                                        there a little.”

Just before reading this,

I had been texting with a friend; without that, this would have been just blah blah again… So when I read it, it just Popped - DO what you’re supposed to do and  then God’s will/word will not seem like just demand upon endless demand.  I

never would’ve gotten

that!! And my friend wrote back, “Yep, this is some-

thing I need to hear right now: “Just do the damn

work, bud!” Which  shows to go me once again

that Christianty is not a solitary pursuit.

                           _________________________Psalm 45:4_

         Ride

      out

   and

conquer

in the

 cause of

   truth

       and

          for the  sake of justice.

I knew that was my verse right away

but, not wanting it to be, I read stead-

fastly on, hoping to find something else

I am becoming  increasingly allergic to bib-

lical language like this - conquering, dominat-

ing, forcing, overpowering. … it just doesn’t so-

und like the Jesus I know, like the God I wish to ma-

ke known. Not that the Bugger doesn’t get his way! It’s

not that at all…  But churches have done incalculable

harm by preaching this “God”- a huge portion of the

people I've met coming into recovery want nothing

to do with Him be-cause they have been told that

he is mean and demandng and  vindictive. And,

WHO needs that when you’re ALREADY trap-

ped in hell? (I know gentle Jesus who never

makes any demands isn’t the One I know

either but you can’t bifurcate  Him.It’s,

as they say, complicated, but critical.

Not withstanding all of that, in my

heart I knew that what was the

verse that was given. I began

to acquiesce -ok, I flat out

gave in & then the image

and that settled it. So

I finished Morning Pr-

ayer, not looking but

having found.

Jesus said

to the

crowds,

“When

you see

a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say ’It is going to rain’; and so it hap-pens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you

say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens.

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the

appearance of earth and sky, but why do

you not know how to interpret

the present time!

  ___Psalm 119:54___

Your

statutes

have

been

like

songs

to me

whereever

I have lived

as a stranger.

 This

is just

yakkety

yak: sat

 down outside

with my coffee

this morning to say

my prayers and had

just read this verse, when

again noticed  the empty

hummingbird feeder. It’s been

empty for weeks, maybe months

now and whenever I notice I’m in

the middle of doing something else.I

make note of it and then forg-et again…

Today was hte day.  As I was going about

those simple tasks -   bringing the feeder in,

cleaning it out and boiling the nectar, I real-

ized that this is my verse. And it fits perfectly.

Although I’ve lived physically in this same house

for 40 years, we are all living as strangers in these

days of  racial in/justice and  long-hidden  systemic

white entitlement, the increasing awareness of the danger of climate change, our unprecedented po-

litical sit-uation, choas and divisive-ness. Oh yes,

and the glo-bal  pandemic of a novel coronavi-

rus that seems to be out of control with no

national strategy,  and the attendant

economic consequences.Add to that I

am a mid-20th-century person try-

ing to navigate through this all

n a language - technology -

which is not my native

tongue. All of which

just says it’s the

perfect verse -

not surpri-

singing-

ly, since

God

picked it,

but still sur-

prising to me.

Oh, the humming

bird feeder was re-

plenished and up again

before I reached the end of Morning Prayer.
