Legend has it that while still a catechumen Martin was approached by a beggar who asked him for alms in the name of Christ. A soldier in the Roman army, Martin cut off part of his military cloak with his sword and gave it to the beggar. The next night Christ appeared to Martin in a dream clothed in half a cloak.
