The Pope is no longer the pope. A lesson in letting go.

                                           Collect at Thursday Evening Prayer

Lord Jesus,
be
our
com-panion
on
the
way,
kindle
our hearts & awaken hope...

The last day of February

   Psalm 71:5.9

You are my hope,
O Lord God,
my confidence
since I was young,
Do not cast me off
in my old age;
forsake me not
when my strength fails.

For
God
alone
my
soul
in silence
waits;
Truly, my hope is in him.

The Feast of St Matthias, the apostle chosen to take Judas Iscariot's place, and Joseph Barsabbas, the runner-up.

                                                                       Saint’s Day Antiphon on the Venite

The Lord is
glorious
in his
saints;
Come,
let us
adore him.

I love the fact that this picture became a little blurry when enlarged, since we have no earthly idea what Matthias looked like. We only know that he was chosen to take his place as an Apostle after the betrayal and death of Judas. Both he and Joseph Barsabbas were nominated and qualified, meaning that they had been followers  "during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John" and continuing on through the resurrection and the ascension, according to Luke in early part of he Acts of the Apostles. What became of either one we do not know, but we can assume that, having come that far, both continued to bear witness to “that which we had heard and known” as the psalmist says, Matthias as the one numbered among the 12 and Joseph who disappeared into that huge crowd of unnamed, anonymous but beloved followers.  And down through the ages, and still still today, the Lord is glorious in his saints - those who witness to him through our various personalities and circumstances. Come, let us adore him.

The Second Sunday in Lent

                                                                               Psalm 24:1,2
The earth
is the Lord’s
and all that
is in it; the
world and all who dwell
therein. For it is he who founded it upon the seas and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

O Lord, your love endures for

St Polycarp, circa 70-156 Bishop of Smyrrna (Imir, Turkey) and Martyr*

                                                                                         The Venite

    The
    sea
    is
    his
    for
    he
    made it

St Polycarp
was a principal connecting link between the apostolic life of the church and Christian life
in the second century. Iraneus, who had known him in his youth, said that Polycarp was a disciple of St John the Apostle...
