Hilda Abbess of Whitby, 680

                                         Habakkuk 3:17-18
Though
the
fruit
tree
does
not
blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails, and the flock is cut off from the fold, and there
is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice
in the Lord; and I will exalt in the
God of our salvation.
Hilda was abbess over the double house of Whitby, a monastery with both men and woman, as was common in the Celtic tradition., It was at the Council of Whitby in 663/664 that the fatal decision was made to follow the Roman rather than the Celtic tradition in England and with that decision disappeared such things as double monasteries… Hilda’s heart was with the Celtic tradition, but she was obedient to the will of the church. And Hilda does not even appear on the Roman calendar! BUMMER!

Pray for religious communities of both women and men,  For cooperation and respect between women and men and For all who encourage scholarship and learning. (New Lutheran Book, edited. )
