Today the Anglican Church remembers Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky (pronounced skĕr-ĕs-kūs'kĭ Chinese: 施约瑟) who was born in Lithuania of Jewish parents n 1831and went on to become Bishop of Shanghai. He died on October 15, 1906. (His commemoration was moved to the 14th to make room for St Teresa of Avila, which I am sue he doesn't mind!)

                                                 Collect for Grace

you have br-ought us in safety
to this new day, preserve us with your mighty power
Paralyzed in 1883, he resigned his see as Bishop of Shanghai, but he continued and completed the translation of the Bible “and other works “into Wenli using one finger of  a single hand, which made him our friend George Higgins hero. He is buried at a cemetery in Tokyo “next to his wife who  supported him constantly during his labors and illness.” Nonetheless she  remains nameless,  identified simply as  “his wife!” Come ON, Standing Commission Liturgy!!!  We don't do this alone - especially if you are paralyzed!

      “I have sat
       in this chair
for over 20 years. It  seemed
      very hard
      at first.
      But God knew best.
He kept me for the work for which I am best suited.”
