Legend has it that Martin, while still a soldier and as yet unbaptized, though a catechumen, cut his cavalryman’s cloak in half to give half to a beggar. Later in a dream Jesus wearing the half cloak... Leaving the Army, Martin eventually became became a Bishop and “one of the founders of the Celtic Church, which spread the gospel to the British Isles, Germany and the Low Counties.”
