“As we light the candles of hope and peace, we also light the candle of joy…” Today is often called Gaudete Sunday (and that’s why the candle is pink.) Gaudete is the Latin word for Rejoice, which is how the Roman Catholic mass for today begins, with the Entrance Antiphon, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice. Indeed the Lord is near.”
