Today we remember in the American Episcopal Church our dark history of racism and prejudice as we celebrate the life and ministry of of Absalom Jones (1746 -1818) a priest of the Church who was born a house slave in Delaware in 1746, who bought his freedom and his wife’s and became a strong abolitionist voice long before the Civil War, which, you remember ,was not until the1860s.

                                                     Psalm 30:6

Weeping
may
spend
the
night,
but
joy comes
in the morning.

Set us free,
heavenly Father,
from every bond
of prejudice & fear;
that, honoring the
steadfast courage of
Absalom Jones, we
may show forth
in our lives the reconciling love
& true freedom of the children of God which you have given us in your son Jesus Christ ~ Collect
