Today in the Anglican and Lutheran calendars we remember William Tyndale (ca.1495-1536) and Miles Coverdale (ca 1488-151568) Translators of the Bible. This seems hokum and of little account today, but it was a big deal at the time and people, including Tyndale, died for translating Scripture into the language of the people.

   Collect for today

Reveal to us
your saving
Word, as we
read & study
the Scriptures,
& hear them
calling us
to repentance
 and life

"Tyndale was forced to live abroad in poverty and danger"and was, in the end,  martyred for his  efforts on October 6, 136, But '80% of his work found its way into King James Bible in 1611.' Tyndale was quoted as saying to 'a prominent Churchman of the day,' “If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the  plough shall know more Scripture than thou doest.' ”   To quote from  Pope Francis' homily last Friday. “Its the ruling class that closes the door to God's way of salvation.”  Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose, or as my Mom would say "It was ever thus."

Miles Coverdale  (I always thought it was CLoverdale!) “completed the first translation of the whole Bible into English which was issued in 1539 as The Great Bible.” I know his name & love him because Archbishop Thomas Cranmer adopted Coverdale’s translation of the Psalter for the Book of Common Prayer!

Pray for the renewal of the church,
for a love of Holy Scripture and
for those who study English prose
and who craft language.
