Today in the Episcopal Church we remember John (1703-1791) and Charles (1717-1788) Wesley, Renewers of the Church.

                                                                Psalm 62:1

For God alone my soul  in silence waits; from him comes my salvation.

Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy  humble dwelling, all they faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every
                                                   trembling heart.
                                                           Hymn # 657 v.1
                                                            Charles Wesley

John and Charles Wesley
were English priests  during the 18th century revival who discovered  a “method”  of re-invigorating the faith of Anglicans. Renewal is never easy i n any age, apparently! Though they  never left the established church  they opened their first “Methodist” chapel in Bristol
in 1740, and after their death the Methodists became a separate denomination. Charles especially was a prolific hymn writer, and his hymns, as our Margret is fond of saying, were sermons complete in themselves.
The wonderful New (Methodist) Book of Festivals and Commemorations, suggests prayer today
 - for hearts burning with the love of God,
 - for a deepened spiritual life,
 - for a social conscience, and
 - for the reconciliation of the Methodists and Anglicans.
